Gutedel dry "Steinrüble"

Gutedel often has the reputation in Germany of being a harmless everyday wine — the Steingrüble from Ziereisen shows what the grape variety can really do when it comes to the right soil.

The Ziereisen winery is located in Efringen-Kirchen, in the far southwest of the Markgräflerland region, a few kilometers from the Rhine and the Swiss border. Hanspeter Ziereisen is one of Germany's most dedicated natural winemakers: minimal intervention in the cellar, no fining, and spontaneous fermentation. The Steingrüble vineyard is one of the sites where he demonstrates that Gutedel is more than just a thirst quencher.

On the nose, flint and citrus peel, with hints of ripe pear and herbs. On the palate, mineral and precise—salt, flint, yellow fruit—with phenolics that provide structure without being restrictive. The acidity is ripe and lively, the finish long and slightly saline. Not a loud wine, but one with a truly lasting impression.

Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Pairs well with tarte flambée with crème fraîche and chives, pan-fried pike-perch, or young goat cheese. Also a good choice as an aperitif on a warm evening.
