San Walfredo

The San Walfredo from Guado al Tasso shows what Merlot can achieve in Tuscany: a dense, structured red wine with a Mediterranean character that is neither too lush nor too lean.

Guado al Tasso belongs to the Antinori family and is located in the Bolgheri area on the Tuscan coast — one of Italy's most renowned red wine destinations. The mild coastal climate with long, warm summers and well-ventilated nights ensures slow ripening and aromatic precision in the Merlot.

In the glass, the San Walfredo shows a deep ruby red. The nose reveals ripe cherries and plums, underpinned by cocoa powder and a hint of dried herbs. On the palate, it has a medium to full body, velvety tannins, and a pleasant spice on the finish.

Best served at 16–18 °C. Pairs well with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised lamb shoulder, or mature Pecorino. Also a good choice as an accompaniment to pasta with wild boar ragù.

Guado al Tasso

Super Tuscans – a style that changed the wine world. What began with Mario Incisa della Rocchetta's private Cabernet cultivation was perfected by his nephew Piero Antinori and oenologist Giacomo Tachis: the world-famous Sassicaia. Shortly thereafter followed Tignanello – Sangiovese without any white wine content.

Because the laws only allowed them to be classified as "table wine," prices rose to astronomical levels. Today, Sassicaia, Tignanello, Masseto, and Ornellaia are among the icons. What they have in common: structure, full-bodiedness, and the courage to innovate.
