Riesling Kallstadter Steinacker dry

The Riesling Kallstadter Steinacker is the coolest and most barren vineyard of Weingut Rings – the organic winery run by brothers Steffen and Andreas Rings from Freinsheim in the Palatinate region. The Steinacker vineyard lies on a high plateau above Kallstadt at an altitude of 230 meters, where the influence of the Palatinate Forest is noticeable: cool winds, cold nights, and barren calcareous marl soils that retain hardly any water, forcing the vines to develop deep roots and maximum concentration.

After hand-harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed as whole clusters, spontaneously fermented with natural yeasts, and then aged for 10 months on the lees in stainless steel and half-sized oak barrels – without fining or additives. The result is what Rings himself describes in three words: a minerally elegant wine.

In the glass, a pale yellow-green with silvery reflections. The nose opens coolly and precisely with citrus, white peach, delicate herbal aromas, and a distinct, chalky minerality. On the palate, taut and focused, with lively acidity, a saline tension, and a long, clean finish.

Served at 9–11 °C with 12.0% alcohol by volume. An ideal accompaniment to fish dishes, scallops, Asian cuisine and fresh goat cheese – mineral, precise and unmistakably Palatinate.

Rings

The origins of today's VDP winery can be traced back to the parents of Steffen and Andreas Rings, who ran a mixed farm that continued to operate as such well into the 1990s. From 2000 onwards, Steffen Rings took over the business and restructured it into a dedicated winery. In 2008, Andreas Rings returned from his apprenticeship at the Wagner-Stempel winery and has since been managing the Freinsheim winery in the Palatinate region together with his brother Steffen. The approximately 40-hectare estate is planted with roughly equal numbers of red and white grape varieties. The vineyards feature diverse soils – gravelly sand, terra rossa (red earth), and limestone – where Riesling, Pinot Noir, and international grape varieties thrive. The individual vineyard sites are located in Freinsheim, Kallstein, Ungestein, and Leitstadt.
