Reichsrat von Buhl Chardonnay

A Chardonnay from the traditional Palatinate winery Reichsrat von Buhl — fermented in wooden barrels, with clear fruit and an acidity structure that makes the wine interesting beyond the first sip.

Reichsrat von Buhl is one of the oldest and most famous wineries in the Palatinate, with vineyards in Deidesheim, Forst, and Ruppertsberg. The grapes for this Chardonnay come exclusively from the estate's own vineyards. Fermentation in wooden barrels gives the wine structure without dominating it — it then matures for a few more months in the bottle.

In the glass, it shows a clear yellow. The nose reveals ripe pear, a hint of white peach, and subtle notes of brioche from the wood contact. On the palate, full-bodied, with a ripe, integrated acidity and a mineral finish. The finish is pleasantly long, spicy, and creamy.

Serving recommendation: Good to drink now. Serving temperature 11–13 °C. Pairs with chicken breast with herb butter, creamy pasta dishes, or a ripe Brie.

Reichsrat von Buhl

VDP Member Estate

In 1849, Franz Peter Buhl founded the winery in Deidesheim – emerging from the division of the Jordan estate, which also gave rise to Bassermann-Jordan and von Winning. Today, all three belong to the Niederberger Group. On approximately 56 hectares, nearly 90 percent is planted with Riesling. The top sites are located in Forst – Kirchenstück, Ungeheuer, and Pechstein – in addition to parcels in Wachenheim, Ruppertsberg, and Königsbach. The VDP estate has been organically certified since 2009 and operates biodynamically. Since 2013, the style has been shaped by Mathieu Kauffmann, formerly cellar master at Champagne Bollinger. His signature is particularly evident in the sparkling wines, which are produced using traditional bottle fermentation.
