Bismarck's bon mot about the "monster" that tasted monstrously good to him is a recurring theme in German wine history. It describes a great wine whose distinctive spiciness makes it truly special. Its powerful body, a gift from the clay and limestone soil, is complemented by aromas like rosewater and cloves. The current Gault Millau guide tips its hat to the consistently excellent wines from the Reichsrat von Buhl estate in recent vintages, ever since a young team, including the experienced estate manager Stefan Weber, took over management as tenants, and feels transported back to the "glorious old days" of the von Buhl winery. Significant investments in the estate in recent years have contributed greatly to this success. This is a wine with such density, power, fruit, and minerality that it is complete and harmonious. A wine to share with friends, enjoy during good conversation, or savor quietly. A hidden gem for pairing with food is dishes enhanced by Arabic or Indian spices. The Winery
In 1849, Franz Peter Buhl founded the winery in Deidesheim – emerging from the division of the Jordan estate, from which Bassermann-Jordan and von Winning also originated. All three now belong to the Niederberger Group.
Riesling accounts for almost 90 percent of the approximately 56 hectares. The top sites are located in Forst – Kirchenstück, Ungeheuer, and Pechstein – in addition to plots in Wachenheim, Ruppertsberg, and Königsbach. The VDP estate has been organically certified since 2009 and works biodynamically.
Mathieu Kauffmann, formerly cellar master at Champagne Bollinger, has shaped the style since 2013. His signature is particularly evident in the sparkling wines, which are produced using traditional bottle fermentation.
