Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay

The Yattarna Chardonnay is Penfolds' white flagship – internally referred to as "White Grange" and developed with the same ambition that the traditional winery has applied to its legendary red wine for decades. What began as an experiment in the early 1990s is now one of Australia's most sought-after Chardonnay positions.

Penfolds sources the grapes from several sites in South Australia and Victoria – including cooler regions like the Adelaide Hills and Tumbarumba – to combine freshness and complexity in one cuvée. Maturation takes place in French barriques, some of which are new, giving the wine structure and fine roasted notes without masking the fruit. Spontaneous fermentation and aging on the fine lees over several months define the creamy texture.

In the glass, the Yattarna shows fresh peach and Nashi pear aromas, plus guava, ripe apple, and a mineral undertone. On the palate, it feels dense yet lively: the acidity is racy without being sharp, and the texture is silky. Fine roasted notes and a hint of citrus zest accompany the long, cool finish.

Serving temperature 10–12 °C. At the table, it pairs well with scallops in butter sauce, pan-fried turbot, or a ripe Comté – anywhere a wine with tension and substance is called for.
