I am 704
The Bin 704 is Penfolds' answer to Napa Valley – consistent in the style of the house, but clearly anchored in the Californian terroir. Anyone who knows the Australian Bin 407 understands the idea: both wines stand for varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, interpreted through the same handwriting from South Australia.
Penfolds is one of the best-known wineries in the southern hemisphere – based in South Australia since 1844, today with wines from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and indeed Napa Valley. The Bin 704 arose from the conviction that the Penfolds philosophy – varietal expression, structure, longevity – also works in California. The name is no coincidence: 704 is the mirror image of 407, a conscious reference to the Australian original.
In the glass, the Bin 704 shows the typical Napa Cabernet aromas: black currant, cassis, and dark plum, underscored by cedar wood and a hint of graphite. Aging in French barriques brings structure without heaviness – the tannins are dense but silky, the acidity keeps everything in balance. Long, spicy finish.
Serving temperature 17–18 °C. Pairs with ribeye steak, braised leg of lamb, or aged cheddar. Accessible now, but will gain with some storage.
