Paul Achs St. Laurent
St. Laurent is Austria's quiet secret weapon among red grape varieties—thin-skinned like Pinot Noir, but with its own unique character. Paul Achs from Lake Neusiedl demonstrates what this grape variety can achieve in Burgenland.
The winery is located in Gols, in the heart of the Pannonian-influenced Seewinkel region. For years, Paul Achs has been one of the most reliable producers of lighter, more drinkable red wines from Burgenland – expertly crafted, without the heavy use of oak by some of his neighbors.
In the glass, the wine shines ruby red with a violet rim. The nose offers ripe cherry, cranberry, and wild raspberry, along with a hint of herbal spice. On the palate, it is juicy and light-bodied, with low tannins and a lively acidity that prevents the wine from becoming flat despite its approachability. A short, fruit-forward finish.
It's most enjoyable served chilled at 14–16 °C — as an uncomplicated accompaniment to roast beef with onions, a cold cut platter, or grilled salmon. It's also perfectly drinkable on its own if the evening stretches on.
The Paul Achs winery from Gols in Burgenland operates according to a simple but consistent conviction: It is not the man who shapes the wine – it is the soil.
The winery has been family-owned for generations. Paul Achs and his team prioritize patience over control, manual labor over technology. The vineyards around Gols – with their layers of limestone, loam, and clay – provide the raw material. The winemaker listens. The result is wines with depth, finesse, and a true sense of place. The Blaufränkisch Altenberg , in particular, awarded 100 points, demonstrates the potential of this philosophy.
