Ölberg Riesling GG QW Rheinhessen

The Ölberg Riesling GG from the Kühling-Gillot winery is a dry Riesling with a lot of pull, dense extract, and a clear origin. It comes from one of the most famous sites in Rheinhessen.

The Ölberg is located on the Roter Hang near Nierstein and Nackenheim. The Riesling vines grow there on steep, south-facing slopes with red weathered soils. The grapes are harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented; the aging takes place in traditional 1,200-liter wooden barrels. The winery is certified as an organic operation.

In the glass is a rich golden yellow. On the nose, mineral notes meet citrus fruits, orange oil, and mandarin, along with sage, blackcurrant leaf, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is concentrated and profound, the texture is silky, and fruit, spice, and minerality are in balance. The finish is ethereally cool and very long.

Serve it at 10 to 12 °C, preferably in a large glass. It pairs well with fried zander, sweetbreads, poultry in cream sauce, or aged mountain cheese.

The Winery

Weingut Kühling-Gillot

VDP Member Estate

The winery of Carolin and Oliver Battenfeld is located on the Rhine terrace. The special thing about Kühling-Gillot is the biodynamics that have been practiced since 2005. For Carolin and Oliver Battenfeld, the brown hare embodies the symbol of fertility and joie de vivre.

In recent years, the winery has developed into one of the absolute top estates in Germany. The slate subsoil of the famous Roter Hang around Nierstein and Nackenheim creates wines that, with their mixture of fine fruit and vibrant minerality, represent something like the ideal type of a great dry wine.
