Nierstein Pinot Noir from First Growth vineyards

Pinot Noir from Nierstein – that sounds unusual, but it is no experiment: St. Antony shows what Rheinhessen's best vineyards can get out of the Burgundy grape variety.

The St. Antony winery is one of the most renowned addresses in Nierstein. The Erste Lagen (Premier Crus) on the Rhine – including classics like Ölberg and Orbel – are located on the "Roter Hang" (Red Slope), the characteristic red slate clay that gives the Pinot Noir exactly what it needs: mineral depth and a striking aromatic profile.

On the nose, the wine opens with cassis and Morello cherries, underpinned by herbs, forest floor, and a subtle smoky tone. In the mouth, it is clear and lively – firm body, but juicy, with an extract sweetness that seems well-integrated and never heavy. The tannins are velvety without being soft; this gives the wine structure and backbone. The finish is long and spicy, with lingering notes of dark berries, herbs, and a hint of smoke.

Recommendation: Serve at about 16–17 °C. Pairs with duck breast with cherry sauce, rack of lamb with thyme, or a strong Tomme cheese.
