The Castillo Ygay from Marqués de Murrieta is one of the iconic wines of Rioja—a Gran Reserva that embodies the classic style of the region at the highest level. The 3-liter magnum bottle ages more slowly and evenly than the standard bottle, making this format the first choice for special occasions or a well-stocked cellar.

Marqués de Murrieta was founded in 1852 and is thus one of the oldest wineries in Rioja. The Finca Ygay near Logroño is a closed estate where Tempranillo sets the tone—supplemented by small proportions of Mazuelo and Graciano. The location on calcareous soils and the continental climate of the Rioja Alta define the style: structured, aromatically complex, with long aging potential.

In the glass, the Castillo Ygay shows ripe dark cherry, plum, and cedarwood, plus nuances of tobacco, leather, and a hint of dried herbs. The tannins are firm but silkily integrated, and the acidity gives the wine backbone and length. The finish is long, spicy, and characterized by a subtle note of vanilla.

Best served at 16–18 °C—preferably decanted an hour before pouring. Pairs with rack of lamb with rosemary, Ibérico pork, or aged Manchego.
