El Coto Rioja Crianza

El Coto Rioja Crianza
A classic Rioja that shows why American oak and Tempranillo go so well together: warm, structured, with a finish that lingers.
El Coto de Rioja is one of the most well-known houses in the region. The grapes for this Crianza come from the Rioja Alavesa — calcareous soils known for firmer, more mineral Tempranillo wines than the sandy sites of the Rioja Baja. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine ages for 12 to 14 months in American barrique barrels (225 l), followed by at least six more months in the bottle. MundusVini awarded a gold medal in 2019, James Suckling 90 points for the 2015 vintage.
In the glass, it shows aromas of dark cherry, plum, and vanilla, plus the typical coconut and woody spice of American oak. The tannins are softly integrated, the body is medium to full, the finish pleasantly long with a hint of roasted aromas.

The story of El Coto de Rioja began in 1970 with the first harvest and continued with the opening of its production facilities in 1976. The Spanish winery is located in the north of the country, an hour and a half from the city of Bilbao. The estate boasts a total vineyard area of approximately 760 hectares, divided among eight different vineyard sites. The largest of these include Finca Los Almendros and Finca Carbonera. In the winery's cellars, the wines are aged in more than 75,000 barriques. Grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Viura, Sauvignon Blanc, and Garnacha are cultivated on the clay soils. El Coto de Rioja has an international presence and exports its wines to over 70 countries worldwide.
