Chanson's Monthélie 1er Cru Gauthey embodies what makes the Côte de Beaune so special in its quiet class: Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy's lesser-known but compelling appellations — without the price tag of a Gevrey or Pommard.

Domaine Chanson is one of the oldest négociant houses in the Côte d'Or, founded in Beaune in 1750. Today, the estate operates with meticulous craftsmanship in the cellar and vineyard, focusing on the varietal expression of each individual vineyard site. Monthélie lies immediately west of Volnay—geologically related, stylistically similar, but significantly more accessible in price.

In the glass, the Gauthey displays the typical Pinot Noir character of the Côte de Beaune: sour cherry and red plum, underpinned by violets and a delicate hint of earth and clove from the barrique aging. The body is medium-bodied, the tannins silky with a slight grip—typical of Burgundy, yet without heaviness. The finish brings a fresh acidity that keeps the wine vibrant.
