Berg Schlossberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs dry

The Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg vineyard is considered one of Germany's great Riesling sites—steep south-facing slopes of weathered quartzite above the Rhine, maximum sun exposure, cool air from the river at night. What grows here needs time to tell its story.

The Geheimrat J. Wegeler wineries have been rooted in Rüdesheim for over 150 years and are among the most traditional estates in the Rheingau. Their Grand Cru from the Schlossberg vineyard is their calling card: rated 96 points by James Suckling (2018 vintage), as well as 94 points by Falstaff and 93 points by Gault Millau in the same vintage.

In the glass, the wine displays a clear straw yellow. The nose opens with ripe white peach and citrus zest, accompanied by a dry hint of hay and a distinct slate minerality. On the palate, firm acidity with substance—not a light summer wine, but a Riesling with backbone. The finish is long, saline, and dry. Decanting is recommended —20–30 minutes in a carafe makes all the difference.
