Eberbach Monastery, founded in the 12th century, is the oldest state-owned wine estate in Germany. And the Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder Cabinetkeller VDP Grosses Gewächs is its most exceptional wine – named after the monastery's historic vaulted cellar, where once only the very best barrels of wine were stored.

Höllenberg is no ordinary vineyard. With slopes of up to 65%, it is one of the steepest sites in Germany – Pinot Noir has been cultivated here since at least 1507, back then it was called "Klebroth". Violet phyllite slate, a pure southern exposure, and the special microclimate of the Rhine Valley create a Pinot Noir that can only be found here.

In the glass, a transparent cherry red. The nose: sour cherry, blackberry, a hint of slate and sandalwood. On the palate, delicate and precise – lively acidity, elegant tannins, and a long, mineral-salty finish that lingers.
