The Hugl winery is one of Austria's young, up-and-coming businesses, which Martin Hugl and his wife Sylvia took over from his father a few years ago. Nestled in the idyllic wine region near the Czech border, the winery is located in the small town of Poysdorf, in the heart of the picturesque Weinviertel. Since 2021, Hugl wines have been entitled to bear the "Sustainable Austria" quality seal. From vineyard work to winemaking and bottling, our entire operation underwent a thorough sustainability review. The certification process assessed the economical use of water, energy, and chemical fertilizers, the efficient use of machinery, fair working conditions, and sustainable business practices.

About Hugl/Wimmer

Two families, one winery: the story of Hugl-Wimmer

Viticulture is literally in the blood of Martin Hugl and Sylvia Wimmer. Both grew up in winemaking families in Poysdorf, both continued their parents' tradition — until they decided in 2006 to press their first vintage together under a shared name. In 2013, the formal merger of both businesses into the Hugl-Wimmer winery followed. The double name was a statement: neither family line was to disappear, and both signatures have flowed into every wine ever since. The family's roots in viticulture can be traced back to 1724 — which gives the winery an extraordinary depth despite its modern appearance.

The winery is located in the heart of Poysdorf, the so-called wine town in the eastern Weinviertel, just a short drive from the Czech border. The approximately 30 hectares of vineyards are spread across south and southwest-facing slopes in a narrow radius around the town — short distances from the vineyard to the cellar, which ensure the freshness of the grapes.

Sustainable management, keeping nature in view

Management in harmony with nature is not a marketing promise for Martin and Sylvia, but a lived reality. Since 2021, the winery has held the Austrian quality seal "Nachhaltig Austria" — a certification that examines the entire operation: economical water use, efficient machine use, the avoidance of excessive pesticides, and fair working conditions. The soils around Poysdorf contribute to keeping interventions minimal: they range from light-sandy to medium-heavy loam to deep loess and loess-loam — a diversity that naturally shapes the most varied grape varieties into characterful wines. In the cellar, Martin Hugl works with manual precision; a traditional vaulted cellar deep below the winery complements modern grape processing and creates stable conditions for aging. The division of labor in the business is clear: Martin is responsible for winemaking and quality control, while Sylvia manages the business, welcomes guests for tastings, and keeps all the organizational threads in her hands.

Spicy, direct, diverse: the Hugl-Wimmer range

The heart of the range is the Grüner Veltliner — the leading variety in Poysdorf par excellence, represented at Hugl-Wimmer in several guises. At the light end is the Saurüssel, a zesty, uncomplicated everyday wine with low alcohol; the classic Weinviertel DAC line brings the typical spicy-peppery character of the region, and the single-vineyard wines — including the Chardonnay from the Ried Zapfersberg — show what the different soils around Poysdorf are capable of. In addition, the cellar contains Pinot Blanc, Yellow Muscat, Gemischter Satz, and red wines such as Zweigelt and Blauburger, some vinified dry, some fruit-sweet. Serving temperature recommendation for the white wines: 8–10 °C. The range reflects the couple's ambition: straightforward, honest wines without pretense — from the uncomplicated bottled wine for everyday life to the age-worthy single-vineyard wine that is worth waiting a few years for.

What our customers say

Today I am ordering for the 3rd time! I first discovered this wine in a restaurant and then received it as a gift again and again until the source dried up. Now I am happy to be able to purchase it online, because it can be tasted on many occasions.

Hugl/Wimmer —
Weinviertel character from Poysdorf

Hugl/Wimmer is one of the up-and-coming wineries in northern Lower Austria. Martin Hugl took over the business together with his wife Sylvia from his father — and has been leading it with a clear vision for the future ever since. The winery is located in Poysdorf, a small town in the Weinviertel near the Czech border, nestled in a quiet, expansive hilly landscape that is primarily known for its Grüner Veltliner and Welschriesling wines.

Since 2021, the business has held the "Nachhaltig Austria" quality seal — a certification that scrutinizes the entire operation: from vineyard management, water consumption, and the use of chemical fertilizers to fair working conditions and economic responsibility. Sustainability here is not a marketing promise, but lived practice along the entire production chain.

The wines directly reflect the terroir of the Weinviertel: clearly structured, with the typical spice and freshness that distinguishes this region. Anyone looking for wines that show their origin and are made with care will find a reliable address at Hugl/Wimmer.
