Wachenheimer Altenburg P.C. Riesling dry QW Pfalz 0.75L

The Wachenheimer Altenburg is one of the coolest Premier Cru sites in the Palatinate — a unique piece that Bürklin-Wolf classifies as a Premier Cru in its own classification system. Limestone weathering soils and the protected hillside location ensure slow, even ripening, which gives the Riesling unusual density combined with freshness.

The winery in Wachenheim has been farming its sites biodynamically for generations and is Demeter-certified. This philosophy extends into the cellar: careful hand-picking, gentle processing, and a consistent avoidance of synthetic interventions. The result is wines that clearly work out the character of their site instead of smoothing it over.

In the glass, the Riesling shows ripe pear and apricot, complemented by a hint of white peach and fine citrus zest in the background. Beneath this lies a distinct mineral vein that reminds one of damp limestone and gives the wine tension. The acidity is present but fully integrated — not a sharp cut, but a tightening line that provides length and freshness. The finish is salty, cool, and persistent.

Good with grilled sea bass with fennel, chicken in white wine sauce, scallops with butter sauce, or a mature Munster from Alsace. The wine also makes a good companion to Asian-inspired dishes with ginger and lemongrass. Drinking temperature: 10–12 °C.
