Volz Riesling GG

A great wine from one of the oldest and steepest Riesling sites in the Saar Valley — the Volz wine from Van Volxem needs time, but gives it back with interest.

Since its acquisition by Roman Niewodniczanski in 2000, Van Volxem has cultivated around 80 hectares on the Saar, including several historic monopole vineyards. Consistent organic farming, spontaneous fermentation, and extended lees aging are the estate's hallmarks—it's no coincidence that their wines regularly rank among the best Rieslings in Germany.

On the nose, the Volz GG initially reveals yeasty and spicy aromas with dried herbs and ripe yellow fruits—mirabelle plum, quince—over a deep, earthy, stony minerality. On the palate, its perfect balance makes it surprisingly approachable at first: juicy, almost candied fruit, lively, very fine acidity, and supple tannins that lend it bite and grip. With aeration, the wine noticeably tightens. The finish is long, slightly yeasty, vegetal, and salty-mineral—a hint of dark berries only emerges right at the end.

Serving suggestion: Decant now or, even better, age for another 3–5 years. Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Pairs well with Saar trout with almond butter, pan-fried turbot, or a mature mountain cheese.
