Embarrassed Wild Winds Sauvignon Blanc
The Wild Winds Sauvignon Blanc from Vergelegen shows what the cooler climate of the Stellenbosch slopes near Hemel-en-Aarde can bring out of this grape variety: not a flat tropical juice, but a nervous, herbaceous structure with real bite.
Vergelegen is one of South Africa's oldest and most prestigious estates, founded in 1700 at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. The vineyards benefit from the cool sea breezes of the nearby Indian Ocean, which extend the ripening period and preserve the acidity. The result is Sauvignon Blancs that offer both freshness and complexity.
The nose is dominated by gooseberry and freshly cut grass, complemented by elderflower, green pepper, and a mineral undertone. On the palate, a crisp acidity follows, along with a medium body and a juicy core of fig and ripe citrus. The finish is long and slightly spicy—without being overly rich.
