Vergelegen Merlot Reserve

Merlot-dominated, with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc – this is how this reserve from the renowned Vergelegen wine estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa, presents itself. Powerful yet finely structured, with a clear signature.

Vergelegen is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Cape region: founded in 1700, it is known today for precise winemaking and consistent quality selection in its Reserve lines. The cool hillside vineyards around Somerset West provide the basis for red wines with depth and fresh potential.

Twenty months in small French oak barrels give the wine structure and richness: ripe blackberry and plum meet notes of dark chocolate and subtle cloves. On the palate, velvety tannins, medium body, the finish balanced between dark fruit and spicy oak.

Serving suggestion: 16–18 °C, now until 2027. Pairs well with braised leg of lamb, beef fillet with red wine sauce or mature cheddar.

Vergelegen

The Vergelegen wine estate is located on the South African coast of False Bay, less than an hour from Cape Town. Founded in 1700 by Adriann van der Stell, it is now owned by André van Rensburg. The estate's vines grow at altitudes between 140 and 310 meters, in clay soils. Clay soils are particularly well-suited for vine growth due to their water retention capacity. The climate in this region is characterized by mild temperatures thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The Vergelegen wine estate cultivates grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Chardonnay for its wines.
