How does the Chocolate Block taste – is the name really accurate?
The name is not far-fetched: dark berry fruit, fine spice notes, and a hint of chocolate define the profile. Added to this is a velvety structure with mineral tension – intense, but not heavy.
Is the Chocolate Block dry?
Yes, completely dry. With 14% vol., it has body and warmth, but remains lively and balanced due to the fruit and the structure of the Swartland granite.
What does the wine pair with at the table?
Grilled beef, lamb, springbok, or game dishes are the obvious companions. However, it also works with braised meat or a mature hard cheese – anywhere you need an expressive red wine.
At what temperature should I serve it?
Ideally at 14–16 °C. Slightly cooler than room temperature – this is how fruit and structure come into their own most clearly. Putting it in the fridge shortly before pouring is enough.
How long does the bottle last after opening?
Thanks to the structure and the alcohol, the Chocolate Block keeps for 2–3 days when opened and well-sealed. On the second day, it is often even more accessible than immediately after opening.
Is it suitable as a gift, even if I don't know the recipient well?
It is one of the best-known red wines from South Africa and has a clear recognition value – both for beginners and for experienced wine drinkers. The bottle is impressive both visually and in terms of content.
The Winery
Boekenhoutskloof was founded as early as 1776 in the "farthest corner" of the beautiful Franschhoek Valley. The "French Corner" (Franschhoek) has preserved much of the French way of life, and thus the wine cultivation is also based on French roots.
The name "Boekenhoutskloof" means something like "ravine of the Cape beeches" and was then also made famous under this name by winemaker Marc Kent.
The most well-known grape variety is the Syrah grape, but Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier are also part of the portfolio.
