The Chocolate Block

The Chocolate Block
The Chocolate Block from Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa's most famous red wines – and a true crowd-pleaser that fully deserves its reputation. Anyone looking for intense fruit, a velvety texture, and real depth in a glass will find exactly what they're looking for here.
The base is Syrah from the Swartland vineyards north of Cape Town, complemented by other grape varieties such as Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier. The soils there are rich in slate and granite, which gives the wine its vibrancy and mineral tension. Boekenhoutskloof works with the utmost care regarding the harvest time, which is crucial for quality given the increasingly dry climate in the Swartland. The result is a complex red wine with dark berry fruit, delicate spice notes, a hint of chocolate, and a structure that impresses both young and with some aging.
The Chocolate Block goes perfectly with:
- Grilled meat, lamb and game dishes
- Mature hard cheeses
- Evenings when you simply want to enjoy a great, expressive wine
An ideal gift for wine lovers who already know South Africa – and a perfect introduction for those who want to discover it.

Boekenhoutskloof was founded around 1776 in the remotest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek Valley. The "French Corner" (Franschhoek) has preserved much of the French way of life, and thus the winemaking tradition is also rooted in French traditions. The name "Boekenhoutskloof" means "Valley of the Cape Beeches" and was popularized under this name by winemaker Marc Kent. The most well-known grape variety is Syrah, but Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier are also part of the portfolio.
