Boekenhoutskloof Patina Syrah

18 months of maturation in foudres and barrique barrels — this is the basis for a Syrah that shows more depth than its "Western Cape" origin might suggest at first glance.

Boekenhoutskloof was founded in Franschhoek in 1776 and is now one of South Africa's most renowned wineries. The Patina Syrah sources its grapes from the Swartland , one of the country's most exciting wine-growing regions: dry climate, slate soils, and old vines. The combination of Franschhoek craftsmanship and Swartland terroir is no accident—it's by design.

In the glass, the wine displays dark blackberry and black olive, along with violet and black pepper, as one would expect from a classic Syrah. The 18 months in oak impart a subtle spiciness—a smoky note, a hint of vanilla—without overpowering the fruit. The tannins are present but well-integrated; the finish is long and slightly salty.

Boekenhoutskloof

Boekenhoutskloof was founded around 1776 in the remotest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek Valley. The "French Corner" (Franschhoek) has preserved much of the French way of life, and thus the winemaking tradition is also rooted in French traditions. The name "Boekenhoutskloof" means "Valley of the Cape Beeches" and was popularized under this name by winemaker Marc Kent. The most well-known grape variety is Syrah, but Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier are also part of the portfolio.
