Batasarro Rosso Lamezia DOC Riserva

The Batasarro shows what Calabria can do when one of Italy's oldest grape varieties is given time to mature: Gaglioppo, aged for 18 months in oak barrels and new barriques, with the character of a Riserva.

The Statti winery is located in the heart of the Lamezia plain in Calabria — one of the few family wineries that consistently positions this region as a quality site. The DOC Lamezia is small, often overlooked, but the Gaglioppo thrives here on barren, well-draining soils with plenty of sun and cool nights that bring structure to the berries.

In the glass, the Batasarro shows aromas of dark cherry and dried plum, underpinned by cedar wood, licorice, and a hint of tobacco — traces of the barrique aging that have integrated well. The tannins are dense but well-supported by 18 months of wood aging; the finish is warm, spicy, and lingers.

Serving suggestion: Best served between 16 and 18 °C. Pairs well with leg of lamb with rosemary, braised beef cheeks, or a strong hard cheese like Pecorino Crotonese.

Statti

Calabria – “Enotria Tellus,” land of wine. Wine has been cultivated here for millennia, and over two thousand years ago the Greeks brought indigenous grape varieties with them. Brothers Antonio and Alberto Statti have dedicated themselves to reviving this tradition. Their goal: to offer a modern interpretation of Calabria and to raise international awareness of the importance of these ancient grape varieties. A challenge, as Calabrian wines are virtually unknown today. The Stattis want to restore the excellent reputation they enjoyed in antiquity. A mission with a distinct flavor.
