Statti Mantonico Calabria IGT

The Statti Mantonico Calabria IGT is a characterful white wine from the deep south of Italy – and one of the most exciting indigenous grape varieties of Calabria that hardly anyone knows outside the region.

The Statti winery manages around 100 hectares of vines in the Lamezia plain, not far from the Tyrrhenian coast. The Statti family is among the pioneers who systematically preserve and vinify Calabrian heirloom grape varieties like Mantonico. Aging takes place in 30-hectoliter acacia wood barrels – a wood that releases less tannin than oak and brings the fruit of the wine to the fore instead of masking it.

In the glass, the Mantonico shows a strong golden yellow. On the nose, orange blossom, ripe apricot, and a hint of dried mango – southern, warm, inviting. On the palate, it surprises with a texture that is unusually dense for a white wine: full-bodied, almost oily, with well-integrated acidity. The finish is long, slightly salty with a balsamic note reminiscent of macchia herbs.

Serving temperature: 10–12 °C.
Pairs well with grilled sea bass with lemon, roast leg of lamb with rosemary, or strong sheep's cheese. It also makes a good companion to spicy North African dishes – tagine, couscous with harissa.

Statti

Calabria – “Enotria Tellus,” land of wine. Wine has been cultivated here for millennia, and over two thousand years ago the Greeks brought indigenous grape varieties with them. Brothers Antonio and Alberto Statti have dedicated themselves to reviving this tradition. Their goal: to offer a modern interpretation of Calabria and to raise international awareness of the importance of these ancient grape varieties. A challenge, as Calabrian wines are virtually unknown today. The Stattis want to restore the excellent reputation they enjoyed in antiquity. A mission with a distinct flavor.
