Spier Signature Pinotage

Pinotage as it should be: dark, spicy, with that characteristic richness that sets the grape variety apart from all others. The Spier Signature Pinotage demonstrates why the winery has been among the most trusted names in the Western Cape for decades.

Spier is one of South Africa's oldest wineries, founded in 1692 in the Stellenbosch hinterland. The Signature line stands for meticulous craftsmanship without pretension: 20% of the wine matures for 8 to 10 months in French oak barrels, the rest in stainless steel tanks – this ensures the fruit remains present without being masked by the wood.

A deep cherry red shines in the glass. The nose reveals ripe cherry, coconut, and vanilla, with underlying notes of pepper, leather, and tobacco—the typical spice profile of the grape variety. On the palate, silky tannins, medium body, and a warm finish with a subtle smokiness. Not an angular Pinotage, but an approachable, well-made example of the style—awarded 3 stars by John Platter .

Spier Cellars

The Spier winery looks back on over 300 years of history. Since its founding in 1692 in Stellenbosch, time has been used to gather experience and perfect the wines. Today, Spier wines are among the best in South Africa.

The winery has also committed itself to sustainability today, and the best wine is produced at affordable prices using state-of-the-art technology and know-how in modern buildings. It was not only with the arrival of oenologist Frans Smit in 1995 that the Spier winery committed itself to quality-oriented viticulture.
