Riesling Schonfels GG

Riesling Schonfels GG
The Schonfels is one of the great steep sites of the Saar – and year after year, Van Volxem extracts a Riesling from this slate soil that shows why this region is one of Germany's most exciting white wine addresses.
Roman Niewodniczanski took over the winery in 2000 and consistently developed it into one of the leading estates of the Saar. Today, Van Volxem cultivates over 80 hectares, many of them in steep sites with old vines on weathered Devonian slate. The Schonfels is located directly on the Saar near Wiltingen – a site with long growing seasons that allows the Riesling maximum ripeness while maintaining a high acid structure. The Grosses Gewächs is vinified dry and matures in large wooden barrels.
In the glass, it shows aromas of white peach and gooseberry, plus floral notes of chamomile and tomato blossom, as well as a fine play of ginger and white pepper. The acidity is precise and dense, carried by a pronounced slate minerality that shapes the long, salty finish.
Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Pairs with zander fillet on beurre blanc, scallops, or a mature mountain cheese.
