Protos Verdejo Reserva

Verdejo and oak barrels — that's not a given in Rueda. The Protos Verdejo Reserva shows what happens when you give the grape variety time and wood: a white wine with real backbone.

Bodegas Protos is one of the oldest wineries in Ribera del Duera's neighboring region of Rueda. The Verdejo vines grow on sandy loam soil that retains the coolness of the nights and preserves the variety's typical herbal notes. The wine is aged for seven months in oak barrels, followed by 17 months of bottle aging—a total of just over two years—before it reaches the shelves.

The nose initially offers wood spice and a hint of vanilla, followed by ripe pear, white peach, and fresh herbs. On the palate, it displays richness without heaviness: the acidity remains lively, the oak well integrated. The finish is long and slightly salty—a sign that the fruit supports the oak, not the other way around.

Serving suggestion: 10–12 °C. Pairs well with grilled sea bass with herb butter, oven-baked chicken, or a mature Manchego cheese. Best enjoyed by 2027.
