Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC Riserva 1.5L
A Montepulciano in magnum format that needs time – and deserves it. The Marina Cvetic Riserva is one of the most famous Abruzzo wines of all and shows what this grape variety can achieve on calcareous-clay soils.
Masciarelli in San Martino sulla Marrucina has been one of the defining wineries of the Abruzzo since the 1980s. Gianni Masciarelli developed the estate into one of the most modern in the region; after his death in 2008, his wife Marina Cvetic – the namesake of this line – continues to run the winery. The Riserva matures significantly longer than legally required, in French barriques, before it goes into the bottle.
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, blackberry, black plum, and violets, plus an undertone of cedar wood and dark chocolate from the barrique aging. On the palate, full body, ripe, firmly structured tannins, and a lively acidity that gives the wine length. The finish is long, spicy, with a hint of tobacco.
Serving temperature: 17–18 °C. The 1.5-liter bottle matures more slowly than the standard bottle – those who have patience will be rewarded.
Pairs with: braised lamb shank, game ragù, mature Pecorino di Fossa, or Bistecca alla Fiorentina.
