Heerkretz Spätburgunder VDP Grosses Gewächs

The Heerkretz vineyard is one of the best single sites in Rheinhessen – a steep porphyry rock slope near Siefersheim, which gives the Spätburgunder from Wagner-Stempel an unmistakable mineral tension.

Daniel Wagner runs the winery in its fourth generation. On the volcanic porphyry weathered soil of the Heerkretz vineyard, the grapes ripen to a complexity that has long been underestimated in Rheinhessen. The GG (Grosses Gewächs) designation reflects this ambition: spontaneously fermented, aged in oak barrels, and unfiltered.

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red color. The nose opens with sour cherry, cassis, and a hint of smoke – typical of porphyry soils. On the palate, silky tannins, medium to full body, lively acidity, and a long finish with notes of graphite and elderflower. Not a heavy, powerful wine, but a precise, site-specific Pinot Noir.

Serving suggestion: Ideal temperature 16–18 °C. Drinking window 2025–2033 – serve now with a little aeration or cellar for another two to three years. Pairs well with venison fillet with chanterelles, duck breast on lentils, or mature Burgundy cheeses such as Époisses.
