Heerkretz Spätburgunder VDP Grosses Gewächs

The Heerkretz is one of the best single vineyards in Rheinhessen – a steep porphyry rock slope near Siefersheim that gives the Pinot Noir from Wagner-Stempel an unmistakable mineral tension.

Daniel Wagner manages the winery in the fourth generation. On the volcanic porphyry weathered soil of the Heerkretz vineyard, the vines ripen to a complexity that has long been underestimated in Rheinhessen. The GG stands for the standard: spontaneously fermented, aged in wooden barrels, unfiltered.

A deep ruby red appears in the glass. The nose opens with sour cherry, cassis, and a hint of smoke – typical for porphyry soils. On the palate, silky tannins, medium to full body, lively acidity, and a long finish with notes of graphite and elderberry. Not a heavy powerhouse, but a precise, site-focused Pinot.

Serving suggestion: Ideal temperature 16–18 °C. Serve now with some air or cellar for another two to three years. Pairs with venison fillet with chanterelles, duck breast on lentils, or aged Burgundy cheese like Époisses.
