Feldspar, Quartz & Mica Chardonnay

Feldspar, Quartz & Mica Chardonnay
The Chardonnay “Feldspar, Quarz & Glimmer” is the avant-garde experiment of Daniel Wagner – the organic winemaker at Weingut Wagner-Stempel in Siefersheim, Rheinhessen. The name says it all: feldspar, quartz, and mica are the three minerals of the volcanic rhyolite – also known as quartz porphyry – on which the highest and coolest part of the “Oberes Horn” vineyard rests. A terroir that is hardly found anywhere else in Rheinhessen.
The grapes are deliberately harvested early – almost as if for a sparkling wine base – and then destemmed by hand and spontaneously fermented. After 18 months of lees aging in tonneaux, the wine is bottled unfiltered, unfined, and with only minimal sulfur dosage. This consistently purist vinification creates an aromatic profile reminiscent of the finest natural Chardonnays of the Jura.
In the glass, a pale, slightly hazy straw yellow. The nose is complex and seductive: quince juice, winter apple, almond pastry, and a hint of brioche – which dissipates upon contact with air, giving way to the scent of flint. On the palate, silky and creamy, with an elegant phenolic structure, vibrant freshness, and a long, minerally pure finish.
At 12.5% ABV, ideally enjoyed at 12–14°C from wide-bowled glasses – the wine greatly benefits from contact with air. An individualist for lovers of avant-garde white wines, it pairs equally well with oysters, scallops, creamy poultry, and aged mountain cheese, as well as with a contemplative glass on its own.
