In the beginning, for the Kellers, it was gastronomy. The Schwarzer Adler has stood for the pinnacle of Baden gastronomic culture for decades. The establishment has held a Michelin star without interruption since 1969. Developing wines as perfect companions for fine food has therefore always been one of the central ideas of winemaking at the Weingut Franz Keller Schwarzer Adler. In the vineyard and wine cellar, just as in the kitchens of the restaurants, the greatest attention is paid to the base product. Only grapes of selected quality—so the conviction goes—can later develop their very own, terroir-typical, and house-typical character in the wine.

The vines grow in the Kaiserstuhl, the warmest wine region in Germany, whose climate is influenced by the Mediterranean via the Burgundian Gate. These favorable conditions, together with the exclusive quality potential of the volcanic weathered soils and their partially up to 30-meter-high, calcareous loess-loam deposits, give the wines their diverse aromas, a distinct fruitiness and minerality, and help them achieve their typical filigree and elegance. Franz Keller and, subsequently, the current patron Fritz Keller have led the Weingut Franz Keller Schwarzer Adler to the national top; the multiple award-winning wines are among the best in the Kaiserstuhl and possess international standing.
