Bassgeige Kähner Grauburgunder GG

This Grosses Gewächs from the Bassgeige vineyard shows how powerful and at the same time complex Pinot Gris from the Kaiserstuhl can be – a wine with edges, spice, and depth instead of mere fruit.

Franz Keller is one of the defining wineries of Baden, based in Oberbergen in the Kaiserstuhl. The volcanic weathered soils of the region give his wines minerality and structure. The Kähner parcel in the top Bassgeige site provides the grapes for this VDP Grosses Gewächs, the highest quality level of the association.

On the nose, tart nutty notes, a hint of tobacco and light wood, plus yellow fruit, yeasty spice, vegetal tones, some bacon, and mineral depth. On the palate, ripe, juicy fruit with plenty of grip and fine bite, aromas of candied nuts, salty minerality, and a spice reminiscent of caraway and cardamom. Densely structured, with power and length on the finish.

Serving temperature 12–14 °C. A food companion for sweetbreads, aged Comté, or guinea fowl with wild mushrooms.

Franz Keller winery – Baden wine culture since 1892. Today managed by Fritz Keller, who, in addition to his profession as a winemaker, is also a hotelier and president of SC Freiburg. Located just ten kilometers from the French border in Oberbergen, it is one of the largest and most internationally respected wineries in Germany.

35 hectares of vineyards, spread over eight sites. Among the best are the Oberbergener Bassgeige and the Pulverbuck. Loess, volcanic rock, basalt weathering – this is where Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc primarily grow. 200,000 bottles full of character every year.

And for those who want to stay longer: the "Schwarzer Adler" hotel and "Kellerwirtschaft" restaurant invite you to visit. Baden, the way it lives.
