Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Grosses Gewächs dry

The Bernkasteler Lay is one of the great Riesling sites of the Middle Mosel — steep, slate-dominated, with deep soils that write minerality directly into the wine. The Geheimrat J. Wegeler winery, one of the most traditional addresses on the Mosel, Rheingau, and Palatinate, vinifies this site as a Grosses Gewächs: dry-aged, the highest quality standard of the VDP.

In the glass, the wine shows aromas of ripe pear and grapefruit, plus a clear slate mineral note — that salty-stony backbone that only real Mosel slate gives to the glass. Added to this is a hint of almond and fresh lime zest. On the palate, medium body, a present but silky acidity structure, finely spiced with a slightly peppery pull in the finish. Balanced, long, without heaviness.

Serving recommendation: Good at 10–12 °C. Pairs with grilled zander fillet, scallops with lemon butter, or mature goat cheese. Those who bring patience will be rewarded with more depth.
