Hess Collection Winery

The Hess Collection – for the love of art and wine. The reserved Swiss winemaker Donald Hess unites wineries in Napa Valley, South Africa, Australia, and Argentina under his name. Each boasts its own art collection – the largest in California. Particularly captivating are the vineyards on Mount Veeder, 600 meters above Napa Valley. Volcanic soil and cooling Pacific breezes create ideal conditions for producing top-quality wines. The vinification of the Cabernet Sauvignons in open stainless steel tanks with gentle agitation is unique. This results in fewer tannins and more flavor. Hess takes unconventional paths – all for one thing: quality.

Hess Collection Winery –
Art, altitude and Cabernet from Mount Veeder

Donald Hess came to Napa Valley as a Swiss entrepreneur – and stayed, captivated by the vineyards on Mount Veeder . At an altitude of 600 meters, where volcanic soils force the roots deep into mineral-rich earth and the Pacific breeze tempers the temperatures even in the height of summer, grapes grow with unusual concentration and freshness. What emerges here is not a typical Napa Cabernet – dense fruit, but with a tension rarely found in the valley floor.

The vinification process follows a unique approach: open stainless steel tanks with gentle agitation instead of aggressive pumping. The result is wines with less harsh tannins, but more texture and drinkability – Cabernets that are approachable even when young, yet also possess aging potential. Hess runs wineries in South Africa, Australia, and Argentina according to the same principle, each with its own distinct character and on-site art collection.

For Hess, the connection between wine and contemporary art is not a marketing concept, but a personal conviction. The collection at Mount Veeder is considered one of the most important private art collections in California. Those who drink Hess's wines gain an understanding of the mindset of someone who doesn't explain quality, but simply embodies it.
