Castello della Sala —
Antinori's white wine domain in Umbria
Castello della Sala is located in the hills of Umbria, not far from Lake Bolsena, on an estate that dates back to the year 1350. Since 1940, the estate has belonged to the Antinori family — known for their pioneering role in modern Italian viticulture. On 160 hectares of vineyards, embedded in a total of 500 hectares of land with forests and eight hectares of olive groves, white wines of remarkable depth are produced here exclusively.
The special feature lies in the soil: tuff and volcanic components store moisture, regulate the temperature, and give the wines a mineral tension rarely found in this form in central Italy. The sunny climate with cool nights ensures slow ripening and distinct aromatics. Chardonnay, Grechetto, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, Riesling, Pinot Bianco, and Viognier are grown — an unusually broad spectrum of international and local varieties for Umbria.
Around 600,000 bottles leave the estate annually — from the fresh Grechetto for everyday life to the age-worthy Cervaro della Sala, one of Italy's best-known Chardonnays. Anyone looking for white wines with character and clear origin will find one of the peninsula's most reliable addresses at Castello della Sala.
