San Giovanni della Sala Orvieto DOC Classico Superiore

A white wine from the heart of Umbria – clearly structured, aromatic and uncomplicated in the best sense.

Castello della Sala is the Umbrian winery of the Antinori family, situated on a hill between Orvieto and Lake Bolsena. The castle itself dates back to the 14th century; the Antinori family purchased the estate in 1940 and developed it into one of the most renowned white wine producers in central Italy. San Giovanni della Sala is the classic entry point into the Sala range of wines – named after one of the estate's vineyards, planted with Grechetto and Procanico grapes in volcanic tuff soil.

In the glass, it displays a pale straw yellow color. The nose is fresh and inviting: white peach, acacia, a hint of pineapple. Lively on the palate, with mild acidity and a pleasantly dry, slightly mineral finish – typical of the volcanic soils of the Orvieto Classico region.

The Winery

Castello della Sala

Castello della Sala is an Italian winery that was founded as early as 1350 and is owned by the well-known Antinori family. The winery consists of a total of 500 hectares, of which 160 hectares are used as vineyard area for wine. An additional eight hectares consist of olive groves.

The soils of the vineyards consist of tuff and volcanic components and, together with the sunny climate and proximity to the sea, offer excellent conditions for viticulture.

For the production of Castello della Sala wines, grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Grechetto, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, Riesling, Pinot Bianco, or Viognier are grown. The winery produces approximately 600,000 bottles of wine annually.
