Vinas del Vero VDV Gran Vos DOC Somontano

The Gran Vos is the flagship of Viñas del Vero – a red wine from Somontano that shows what this underestimated region in the Aragonese foothills of the Pyrenees can achieve.

Viñas del Vero is one of the defining wineries of the DOC Somontano and has contributed significantly to establishing this region on the Spanish wine map. The soils of limestone and marl at an altitude of around 450 meters, combined with cool nights and warm days, provide grapes with good acidity structure and aromatic depth. The Gran Vos combines classic grape varieties of the winery – typically Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – with aging in oak wood.

In the glass, it shows deep ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, ripe blackberries, black currant, and an undertone of cedar wood and tobacco. On the palate, full body, soft, ripe tannin, and a subtle vanilla note from the barrel aging. The finish is long, with a slight spiciness of cocoa powder and dried herbs.

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Recommendation: leg of lamb with rosemary, roast duck, or a strong Manchego. The 1.5-liter bottle is well suited for a table with several people.

Viñas del Vero

The Spanish winery Viñas del Vero was founded in 1986 in the Somontano region and initially had about 550 hectares of vineyards. Since 2008, the company has belonged to the Sherry group González Byass. Today, the winery owns over 1000 hectares of vineyards, which consist mainly of sandstone soils with chalk and clay components. In the Somontano region, there is a temperate climate, which is characterized by cold winters and rather short summers. The average temperature here is 11°C. Furthermore, Viñas del Vero has a state-of-the-art wine cellar with tall stainless steel tanks, which, thanks to their size and the use of gravity, make mechanical means unnecessary. The winery's cultivated grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Garnacha and Merlot. Viñas del Vero produces approx. five million bottles of wine annually.
