A Day at the Sea Sauvignon Blanc – Weingut Hammel & Cie (Germany, Palatinate)
The Hammel & Cie winery is one of the oldest family businesses in the Palatinate and has relied on artisanal vinification for generations. For the “A Day at the Sea,” they split the aging process: one half matures on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks, the other in wooden barrels. On the nose, the glass opens with kiwi, mango, and passion fruit, followed by grapefruit and a hint of rhubarb. On the palate, a mineral note comes to the fore, which carries the ripe fruit profile and lengthens the finish.
The wine is dense, but never heavy. The wooden barrel portion gives it body without imposing roasted aromas, while the stainless steel keeps the fruit fresh and clear. This creates a Sauvignon Blanc that doesn't tip in one direction: neither grassy-sharp nor lush-soft. Serve it at 10–12 °C, as this is when the fruit and minerality come together best.
Pairs well with: grilled sea bass, shrimp with lemon-herb butter, or fresh goat cheese. Salads with grapefruit or avocado and light fish dishes with herbs also harmonize with the fruit and freshness of the wine.
Six bottles of the same wine have a practical advantage: you can try it with different dishes and in changing company to see how it behaves in the glass. Plus, there is the price advantage compared to buying the bottles individually. The pack is suitable as a supply for the summer season, as a gift for hosts who love to cook, or as an introduction to the Palatinate Sauvignon Blanc style. Six bottles, one wine, many occasions.
