Penfolds RWT Shiraz Mag. HK

The RWT Shiraz is Penfolds' answer to the question of what happens when you consistently age Barossa Shiraz in French oak – instead of the American wood that characterizes most Australian red wines of this magnitude.

Penfolds has been one of Australia's defining wineries since 1844. The RWT – Red Winemaking Trial – was created in 1997 as an experiment and is now an independent style in the house: Barossa Shiraz, aged in French barriques, with the goal of keeping fruit and structure in balance instead of putting wood in the foreground.

In the glass, it shows deep ruby red. On the nose, blackberry, dark plum, and violets, underneath cedar wood and a hint of black pepper – the Barossa terroir with its warmth and depth is clearly recognizable. On the palate, full-bodied, with velvety tannin and a ripe, well-integrated acidity. The finish is long, spicy, with a mocha note from the barrel aging.

Drinking recommendation: Serve at 17–18 °C. Pairs with braised lamb shoulder, beef brisket, or strong hard cheese.
