Ockfen BOCKSTEIN Riesling dry GG

The Bockstein is one of the great Saar sites — Devonian slate, steep slopes, cool climate. What grows here tastes of its place: mineral, precise, with a fruit that never pushes itself to the foreground.

The von Othegraven winery in Ockfen has been part of the Kuhn family since 2010 and has quickly worked its way back to the top of Saar winemakers. The steep Riesling slopes at the Bockstein are hand-picked, the wines spontaneously fermented and aged in wooden barrels — classically Saar-style, without compromise.

In the glass, the GG shows a cool, flint-influenced nose, behind it mirabelle plum and fresh herbs. Firmly structured on the palate, with invigorating acidity and a body that has weight without appearing heavy. The fruit remains subtle — mirabelle, some citrus zest — embedded in a distinct minerality. The finish is long, stony, tart.

Serving recommendation: 10–12 °C. Pairs with grilled sea bass, zander in butter sauce, or an aged Comté. With further years in the cellar, the wine will gain even more depth.

Maximilian von Othegraven – a winery steeped in history. Founded in the early 16th century, it enjoys a romantic location on the banks of the Saar River, opposite the village of Kanzem, surrounded by a park with rare trees. Family-owned since 1805, the estate was taken over by Günther Jauch and Dorothea Sihler-Jauch from their great-aunt in 2010. With an uncompromising commitment to quality, they have elevated it to the top ranks of German Riesling producers. Right outside the door: the south-facing Kanzemer Altenberg vineyard – one of Germany's greatest Grand Crus. Mineral intensity, delicate fruit spice, vineyard peach, ripe apples. Floral, balanced, magnificent.
