Layet Riesling GG

The Layet is the Grosses Gewächs from Nik Weis from the steep site of the same name near Leiwen – a Riesling that brings the seriousness of this parcel directly into the glass.

Nik Weis manages the St. Urbans-Hof winery on the Middle Mosel in the fourth generation. The sites around Leiwen and Piesport are among the best slate slopes of the Mosel; the Layet lies on gray Devonian slate with a steep southern orientation. It is vinified dry, with the ambition to prioritize site typicity over fruitiness.

In the glass, the 2021 initially shows restrained citrus zest and grapefruit, underneath lies a mineral core of slate and wet stone. With some air, it opens up to herbs, white peach, and a hint of petrol – the classic Riesling marker that indicates aging potential. The acidity is precise and taut, the finish long and salty. Not a broad, lush wine – rather lean, focused, with drive.

Accessible now, but gains with two to three years of cellar rest. Serving temperature 10–12 °C.
