Layet Riesling GG

Layet is Nik Weis's Grand Cru from the steep vineyard of the same name near Leiwen – a Riesling that brings the seriousness of this plot directly into the glass.

Nik Weis runs the St. Urbans-Hof winery on the Middle Moselle, now in its fourth generation. The vineyards around Leiwen and Piesport are among the best slate slopes in the Moselle; the Layet vineyard lies on grey Devonian slate with a steep southern exposure. The wines are produced dry, with the aim of emphasizing the terroir's typicity over fruitiness.

In the glass, the 2021 vintage initially displays restrained citrus peel and grapefruit, beneath which lies a mineral core of slate and wet stone. With a little aeration, it opens up to herbs, white peach, and a hint of petrol – the classic Riesling marker that suggests aging potential. The acidity is precise and firm, the finish long and saline. Not a broad, opulent wine – rather lean, focused, and with drive.

Drinking window: 2025–2033. Available now, but will improve with two to three years of cellaring. Serving temperature: 10–12 °C.
