La Rioja Alta 904

The 904 is La Rioja Alta's flagship Gran Reserva—a wine that demands patience and rewards with depth. First bottled in 1904, it has since represented the estate's classic style: no fleeting trends, no excessive oak, but consistent craftsmanship.

La Rioja Alta is one of the oldest wineries in the Rioja Alta region, founded in 1890 by five Basque and Rioja families. The winery produces its own barriques and ages its 904 for approximately four years exclusively in used oak—a conscious decision that prioritizes the fruit over the barrel. A small percentage of Graciano in the blend adds freshness and aromatic interest to the otherwise Tempranillo-dominated base.

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red color with a garnet rim. The nose offers aromas of dark blackberry, dried plum, a hint of mint and almonds, along with balsamic notes and subtle coffee hints from the extended oak aging. On the palate, fine-grained, ripe tannins, good structure, and a long, fresh finish.

Serving temperature 16–18 °C , ideally decant two hours before drinking. Pairs well with herbed leg of lamb, braised beef shoulder, or mature Manchego cheese. The drinking window is still open—those with patience will be rewarded with further complexity.

La Rioja Alta

La Rioja Alta, SA – behind this name lies one of the most venerable names in Spanish winemaking. For over 130 years, people have worked here with a clear philosophy: patience is not a luxury, but the foundation for great wine. The winery is located in the heart of the Rioja Alta and has never been driven by trends. Instead, they focus on long barrel aging, hand-picked grapes, and a deep understanding of their vineyards. The result? Wines you won't forget – with red fruits, delicate spices, and a velvety warmth that lingers on the palate. Sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a lived practice: Viña Alberdi was recently awarded Sustainable Wine Product of the Year – proof that tradition and responsibility go hand in hand. Four wineries, four regions – from Rioja to the Rías Baixas. But no matter where you look: the same care, the same passion.
