Künstler Assmanshausen Höllenberg Spätburgunder GG 0.75L

The Höllenberg in Assmanshausen is considered one of the most important Spätburgunder sites in Germany — steep, slate-rich, with a microclimate that makes red wine in the Rheingau possible in the first place. The Künstler winery from Hochheim has consistently developed this site and, with the Große Gewächs, brings a wine that clearly depicts the peculiarities of this terroir.

In the glass, it shows deep ruby red. The nose opens with dark cherry and blackberry, behind which are dried herbs and a subtle mineral spice that reminds one of the slate soil of the site. On the palate, the wine is powerful and at the same time surprisingly supple — the tannins are present and structure-giving without biting, the acidity gives tension and length, and an elegant minerality remains in the finish.

Serve it at 16–18 °C with game dishes like leg of venison or wild boar loin, with duck breast with dark sauce, or with a mature mountain cheese. Those who drink it pure should best give it some time in the decanter — then the Höllenberg unfolds what it can do.
