Klumpp Spätburgunder Gipskeuper
Anyone who underestimates Pinot Noir from Baden hasn't yet tasted Klumpp's Gipskeuper. Firm body, velvety tannins, a long finish—this isn't a pleasant, easy-drinking wine, but a serious red wine with backbone.
The Klumpp winery is located in Bruchsal on the edge of the northern Kraichgau region, where the characteristic gypsum-keuper soil—a sulfate-rich clay marl—imparts unusual minerality and structural depth to the Pinot Noir. The Klumpp family is among the most reliable wineries in the region, known for precise vinification and a clear varietal character without excessive use of oak.
On the nose, the wine initially displays cool cedar notes, followed by violets, dark chocolate, and ripe cherries. On the palate, it is delicately juicy and crisp: ripe cherry with a subtle fruit sweetness, a hint of milk chocolate, powerful yet dense. The tannins are velvety but firm—slightly drying, which suggests structure and aging potential. The finish is long, with spicy chocolate and cherry lingering notes.
Serving temperature 16–17 °C. Pairs well with venison goulash, roast duck breast with red cabbage, or a mature Comté cheese. Also enjoyable on its own, this is a wine that takes its time—and it's worth it.
