Karthäuserhof Schieferkristall Riesling dry

The Schieferkristall is the estate wine of the Karthäuserhof — and thus the most direct answer to the question of what this winery in the Ruwer valley stands for: Riesling with cool fruit, lively acidity, and that unmistakable slate minerality.

The Karthäuserhof near Trier-Eitelsbach is one of the historical addresses of the Ruwer. The winery looks back on a monastic history that reaches back to the 14th century and is today one of the most reliable addresses for classic Mosel Riesling. The Schieferkristall combines grapes from several sites — the Karthäuserhofberg as well as the Ruwer communities of Mertesdorf and Waldrach — and thus bundles the terroir spectrum of the estate into a single wine.

On the nose, citrus zest, fresh herbs, and a mineral slate accent. On the palate, despite a lean body and low alcohol, the wine shows real pressure: the acidity is crisp but not edgy, plus a fine melt on the finish. Not a lush wine — rather precise and coolly calculated.

Serving temperature 9–11 °C. Pairs well with grilled river perch, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, or a mild goat cheese. Also a good choice as an aperitif if you want something with a bit more substance than a light sparkling wine.
