Kanonkop is considered one of the leading producers of Cabernet Sauvignon in South Africa – and this wine shows why. Robustly structured yet with a silky balance, it needs little convincing.
The winery is located in Simonsberg-Stellenbosch , where the vines put down deep roots in well-drained granite soils. Family-owned for decades, Kanonkop is known for its artisanal winemaking and long aging potential.
24 months in French oak barrels – 60% new, 40% used – significantly shape the aromas: blackberry and blackcurrant meet cedarwood, dark chocolate, and a hint of roasted hazelnut. On the palate, dense yet refined tannins, lively acidity, and a long, spicy finish with hints of tobacco.
Serving suggestion: Ready to drink now, but will continue to develop until 2032. Serving temperature 17–18 °C. Pairs well with braised lamb, beef fillet with peppercorn sauce, or aged cheddar.

How does the Cabernet Sauvignon from Kanonkop taste?
Dense and powerful, with blackberry and black currant at the center, plus cedar wood, dark chocolate, and roasted hazelnut from the 24 months in barriques. The tannins are firm but polished, the finish long and spicy with a tobacco note.
What does this wine pair with best?
With braised lamb, beef fillet with pepper sauce, or grilled steak. Aged cheddar or pecorino also harmonize well with the firm tannin structure.
At what temperature should it be served?
16–18 °C, i.e., noticeably cooler than room temperature. This keeps fruit and acidity present without the alcohol (14.5% vol) dominating.
