Kanonkop —
red wines from Simonsberg, Stellenbosch

Kanonkop lies on the southern slope of Simonsberg, one of the most renowned red wine vineyards in the heart of Stellenbosch . For four generations, the Krige family has cultivated 125 hectares here exclusively with red grape varieties—no white wine, no compromises. The soils of weathered granite and schist impart a mineral depth to the wines that can be tasted in the glass.

The heart of the winery lies in its bush vines, some over 65 years old, which thrive without irrigation and produce low yields. Winemaker Abrie Beeslaar, who joined the estate in 2002, relies on classic vinification: open fermentation tanks, hand pumping, and aging in French oak. Kanonkop's Pinotage is considered a benchmark for the variety—dense, structured, with aromas of dark plum and mocha, and a long, dry finish.

Besides the Pinotage, the Paul Sauer—a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot—and the Kadette, a more approachable entry into the Kanonkop range, are also impressive. Anyone looking for South African red wine of international caliber will find one of the continent's most reliable sources here.
