Johannisberg Riesling *** GG QW Nahe 0.75L

The Johannisberg is one of the most famous single vineyard sites of the Nahe — steep, slate-rich and predestined for Riesling with depth. The Prinz Salm winery, in family hands for generations and a VDP member, cultivates this site according to biodynamic principles and brings it into the bottle as a Grosses Gewächs: the highest quality level of the VDP for dry wines from classified single vineyard sites.

In the glass, the Riesling shows the typical minerality of the Nahe slate: aromas of citrus zest, white peach and a hint of herbal spice, underpinned by a fine salty tone in the finish. The acidity is present but integrated — not stinging, but a lively line that keeps the wine long and fresh.

You should best serve it at 10–12 °C with dishes that mirror its minerality: zander on root vegetables, scallops with parsley oil or an aged mountain cheese. It also cuts a fine figure with Asian-inspired dishes with ginger and lemongrass.

Weingut Prinz Salm

VDP Member Estate

The German winery Prinz Salm is now managed in the 32nd generation and is located in Wallhausen in the Nahe region. It was probably founded around the year 1200. The owner of the winery is Michael Prinz zu Salm-Salm and calls 18 ha of vineyards his own. The soils of the vineyards mainly consist of green slate. In addition to the primarily grown grape variety Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Blanc de Noir or even Pinot Noir grapes are also processed into wines at the Prinz Salm winery. The best locations include, for example, the Wallhäuser Johannisberg or the Binger Scharlachberg. Up to 120,000 bottles of wine are produced here annually.
