H3 Horse Heaven Hills Merlot
The Merlot grapes for H3 Horse Heaven Hills are harvested at the end of September and immediately brought to the winery. Winemaker Juan Munoz-Oca leaves about 30% of the grapes whole, the rest are gently crushed, and the entire harvest is fermented on the skins for about seven to 14 days. Subsequently, the wines first undergo malolactic fermentation (in stainless steel tanks as well as in oak barrels), are then composed into the final blend, and finally complete themselves during their 14- to 18-month maturation in new (33%) and used barrels (67%) made of American and French oak.
Soil: low-fertility, but well-drained sandy soils with low water storage capacity, which allow for precise growth control.
warm cherry red with purple sheen
Aroma: aromatic bouquet of ripe blackberries and spices
Taste: the Horse Heaven Hills Merlot also shows lush berry fruit on the palate, finely underlined with slightly smoky notes; velvety soft in the finish, very juicy and extremely seductive with fine hints of dark cocoa.
